Those who think the cat but a beast,
Has not their humanity seen:
When in their final hours return
To where they, as a kitten had been…

Lay their head upon a bed…
To which they handed on their last leap!
Cradled like the kitten they were by those who reared it,
As it passed to eternal sleep…

Eyes open last, but there was no life:
As it lay in front of fire…
Loyal as a dog, in their own way…
To such devotion can many aspire?

We dug its grave, both wide and deep…
Midnight moon shining above:
An honour to dig, in the Irish tradition…
Stoic men, bury beast, that too is love.

Have your say...
