What Did the Neighbours in Nazareth Say?

This was initially going to be a funny poem dwelling on gosspiers in Nazareth being like what we would find today in Ireland, and how all this Son of God stuff and the ensuing crucifixion would make them gossip and giggle. It developed a bit sombre however. Maybe the comedy verse will be written another day...

When the body in the tomb was laid
News of the crucifixion to Nazareth reached
What did the neighbours in Nazareth say
Who knew Christ before the Gospel he teached?

Its alleged that some editions or parts of the Talmud insult Jesus and Mary directly. The truth in that we do not know. But we can imagine the talk around the folk who did not follow Jesus but knew him and his family growing up and living in Nazareth...

Did they talk of how respectable he was
Working with his farmer in wood
Before being to it nailed to die
As only a criminal could?

Did they fault his rearing
Did they think he fell into bad company?
His taste for the fellowships of the fallen well known
With whom no man of repute would be seen.

Did they think he went a bit mad
As sometimes some folk do?
Did they think he was possessed
Did they snigger and joke too?

Did they remark he was born when mother was but bethrothed
As rabbis have done in insult since then
Did his mother hear, did it hurt her heart
Who bore the Savior of all Sinful Men?

Have your say...
