They Came, They Voted, Ireland Changed

There was a rainbow over the town of Clidfen in Connemara when I visited it a couple of days ago, I wondered was it a good omen for the same sex marraige referendum, and it seems that it was as it has passed with room to spare. The youth, not known for voting, came back in planes to vote from abroad, such is the depth of feeling on the matter...

The youth, not known for voting, came back in planes to vote from abroad, such is the depth of feeling on the matter…

They came by boat, they came by plane
They went by busses, I got the train
They registered to vote who never voted before
I voted, having never missed the chance to, in Tullamore

The rainbow seen before over Clifden town
I wondered was it a good omen as on it I looked down
It seems it was, Im proud I must confess
To be Irish today, for we voted YES!

Everything changed on paper, a beauty born
Yet nothing has changed, I must warn
This is of the battle against bigotry the easy part:
It will take time to change each hardened heart…

They came, the conquored, they returned content
To the scattered homes across the globe they went
Or to scattered cities, where they now live
Where to survive and thrive, so much they give…

If we can keep this passion, austerity matters too…
If we can channel this action, we can turn the few
Who heretofor to the system stood
To a flood to fight for the common good!

Have your say...
