Passing Ballybrit Castle

Ballybrit Castle in Galway, on the grounds of the racecourse
Ballybrit Castle in Galway, on the grounds of the racecourse

By force won from the feirce O’Flahertys
Held by Burke for the English Crown
On the wrong side of the Wars of the Roses
They in time faced the English who wanted to burn it down.

The English and French they cast aide
For the tongue once their regime saught to oppress
On behalf of the Crown who thought little of the Irish
That thought of them now even less.

But they kept their haircuts and their way of speaking
Who across the island are now far flung
Freedom regained in time and its passing
At the cost of spilled blood and the native tongue.

The castle today is but a ruin standing
To I, the walker as I pass
Out for a walk on a Sunday morning
When I should be in church attending mass!
