As with all other each morning I
Queued for the coming tram
And waiting impatiently I sigh
And for others dont give a damn
For I have a time to be
Another place far far from here
And the world exists only for me
As slowly the tram does appear
As a silver snake from among the grass
Of tall biuldings on each side
And between others I focibly pass
To find my seat inside.
And each morning as I go
In and out of Dublin town
As the tram moves along slow
I look at girls who look bored and frown
As if they wished they were not there
As wish I was not there do I
And for none in the world they care
As the cityscape slips by.
As they, of all shapes and sizes
On seats sit and at pillars stand
In the land of no surprises
Where our trams route in rail grove is planned...
She sits there, a vision in green
With blond tresses and black roots
A vision of beauty to be seen
Among this carraige load of brutes
To where shes going I do not know
For few to each other speak
As our ways we go
Even the proud in here are meek
And unless they brush or bang
Against another by accident
They stand beside each other and hang
Their heads, in silence content.
She stood there, dressed in black
Sunglasses over half her face
And I sat down there at the back
And never offered her my place.
Each to their own to fight their way
She is young and in full health
She can stand her ground, to myself I say
She looks like one of wealth
And to all others she does not speak
Though maybe it is just shes shy
And to converse I do not seek
When I with my gaze catch her eye.
She slouched there, dressed in white
Though she was far from pure
She was a scanger, I knew all right
And of that one could be sure.
Her male compansion, on his face dirt
Talked loud, looked drugged, maybe coming down
When told by the conductor to put on his shirt
Said hed a skin condition, with a frown
And when the conductor went his way
At his answer he had a sneer
With his lady friend, I moved away
They were as nasty as they did appear.
And I wonder how each morning new
And evening, as low went down the sun
Did I appear to those women few
That fate set his hand upon
To be in each others company in a tram
As it trundled in and out of town
Where each smile and hello is a sham
And every tramp wears a crown
As much as I, when they their ticket have
As is as things should be
The great and the grimy are
Passengers, all equal, just like me.
